Off-grid solar is fundamentally different from a standard grid-connected installation. The system must reliably supply the property when there is no electricity network available to cover a shortfall.


Understand the loads first


Good off-grid design begins with a detailed understanding of daily and peak electricity use. Pumps, air conditioning, cooking, hot water, workshops and other large loads can materially change the solar, inverter and battery requirements.


Solar and battery sizing


The solar array needs to provide enough energy to operate the property and recharge battery storage. Battery capacity needs to cover the required periods without sufficient solar generation while staying within the equipment’s operating limits.


Generator integration


A generator can provide an additional energy source during extended poor weather or unusually high consumption. Generator selection, starting behaviour, control and charging strategy should be considered as part of the complete system.
