NSW Government 0% Solar & Battery Loans: 2026 Home Energy Saver Guide

Updated: Sep 7
NSW households now have a new way to make solar, home batteries and other energy-saving upgrades more affordable. The NSW Government Home Energy Saver program provides eligible households with access to zero-interest loans of up to $15,000, repaid over up to 10 years.
For homeowners across Lismore, Ballina, Byron Bay, Casino, Tweed Heads and the wider Northern Rivers, this can reduce the barrier of paying for a solar or battery system upfront. Northern Rivers Solar & Electrical can help you understand the solar or battery side of the project, prepare a tailored quote and point you toward the current program information.
What is the NSW Home Energy Saver loan?
The Home Energy Saver program is a NSW Government initiative designed to help households lower energy bills and improve home energy efficiency. Eligible households can apply for a zero-interest loan of up to $15,000 and repay eligible upgrade costs over a period of up to 10 years.
Loan amount: up to $15,000.
Interest rate: 0% for eligible loans under the program.
Repayment period: up to 10 years.
Household income limit: combined taxable income up to $210,000, subject to the program rules.
Eligible upgrades include rooftop solar, household batteries and a range of other energy-saving improvements.
Can the loan be used for solar panels and batteries?
Yes. NSW Government information specifically identifies rooftop solar and household batteries among the eligible energy-saving upgrades. This makes the program particularly relevant to households considering a new solar system, adding a battery to an existing solar system, or installing solar and battery storage together.
Other eligible upgrade categories identified by the NSW Government include reverse-cycle air conditioning, insulation, switchboard upgrades, ceiling fans and draught-proofing. The exact product, installer and finance requirements should always be checked before committing to an installation.
What could repayments look like?
Because the loan is zero interest, the repayment calculation is easier to understand than ordinary consumer finance. For example, a $10,000 eligible upgrade repaid evenly over 10 years would be about $83.33 per month. A $15,000 loan repaid evenly over 10 years would be about $125 per month. Actual repayment arrangements depend on the finance provider and your approved loan terms.
Who may be eligible?
The NSW Government states that the zero-interest loan is available to eligible households with a combined taxable income of up to $210,000. Other eligibility requirements apply, and finance approval is handled through selected finance providers. Customers should confirm the current rules before relying on the loan as part of a purchase decision.
Do I need to join a Virtual Power Plant?
The Home Energy Saver zero-interest loan is separate from NSW Virtual Power Plant incentives. A VPP may be an option for some battery owners, but it is not the same program as the zero-interest Home Energy Saver loan. This distinction can be important for households that want a battery without choosing a VPP arrangement.
Can other battery incentives still apply?
Separate federal and NSW energy incentives may also be available depending on the equipment, installation date and current program rules. Incentive values and eligibility can change, so NRSE recommends checking the current rebate position when your system is quoted rather than relying on an older advertised dollar figure.

Program status update — 7 September 2026
